Deirdre Kelleghan is an Artist, Astronomer and Educator who invents and enacts creative workshops to help bring about proactive understanding of our solar system and space exploration.

In practice her work is always engaged in the NOW. Her workshops use simple materials to splice real time space events with creative processes, enhancing learning for all. In 2011, Deirdre was awarded the Science Prize for Online Resources in Education. The drawing workshop was Deadly Moons, the awarding body was the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Deadly Moons has visited New York and has been enacted in many countries from Belgium to Vietnam. Deadly Moons workshops were carried out at Draiocht, Blackrock Castle, Birr Castle, The National Science Art Exhibition in Canada and schools all over Ireland. Deirdre’s workshops are often supported by ESA and NASA with educational material.

Action Sun, Deirdre’s workshop to bring the Sun to Earth in real time was considered an exemplary initiative in innovation and creativity in science teaching by STENCIL (2012) Science Teaching European Network for Creativity and Innovation in Learning. Action Sun played a part in the opening of the UNESCO led event Building the Scientific Mind 2013 in Java Indonesia.

Deirdre is co-author of Sketching the Moon, an Astronomical Artists Guide, is a contributing artist/writer for BBC Sky at Night Magazine and also a regular contributing writer for The Vatican Observatory Foundation.
Her latest drawings are a ‘Nature Series’ inspired by Standing Stones, Flora and Fauna in the Mayo landscape.
